John!
It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since I first ran for office and folks like you helped me win my race against a 28-year incumbent. But my team just found a video of me at the Victory Fund’s office following my initial win and I wanted to share with you. Give me a moment to explain why takeaways from my first race still hold true today, then donate $10 to my campaign for Lieutenant Governor before tonight’s end-of-quarter deadline.
When I ran for office over a decade ago it was my first step into politics. I was going head-to-head against a nearly three-decade incumbent in a state that had never had an openly LGBTQ legislator. After eight months of campaigning through thick and thin, I won by just 233 votes.
Facing off against an establishment incumbent candidate was no easy feat. We leveraged our networks, spent a lot of time talking to folks to make our case, and had an incredible grassroots team that pitched in when they could. I couldn’t be more grateful for the folks that believed in my values, hoped for change, and donated their time and hard-earned money to help me win.
Now, after a decade in office giving the LGBTQ community a seat at the table in Harrisburg, fighting to make health care more affordable and accessible, and investing in public education, I find myself in a similar position. I’m in a tough race against a candidate backed by the establishment, but I know with supporters like you we can invest strategically in reaching voters across the state.
I won my first race by just 233 votes, so when I say “every vote counts”, I mean it.
If you can, watch my video below, then donate $10 before tonight’s quarterly deadline to power voter outreach, targeted advertising, and more that it will take to win this race and transform Pennsylvania’s broken politics.
