As Women’s History Month comes to a close, I want to take a moment to uplift and amplify the voices of the powerful women in the New York State Senate of which I am proud to serve alongside. I also want to give a giant shout out and endless thanks to the brilliant women in my office, without whom none of our accomplishments would be possible.
And I want to especially acknowledge my Chief of Staff, Tori Kelly, who changed the face of politics – and who I am so proud of.
A decade ago, she courageously came forward to report a former powerful assemblymember for sexual harassment. When she did this she was told that New York’s laws didn’t apply to her - they didn’t protect her.
The “personal staff loophole” exempts staff of government officials and judges from the anti-harassment protections afforded all other employees.
Until now.
Just this month, we stood next to Governor Kathy Hochul as she signed my legislation that closed the loophole that tried to deny her justice.
