As my colleagues and I work to pass an inclusive budget with subsidies for childcare, access to healthcare, and housing protections, I wanted to highlight an issue that we are currently fighting for in the state budget that doesn’t get enough attention.

District 13 has one of the largest transgender communities in New York if not the country and the 2023 budget must make sure our neighbors are taken care of. I fought to ensure the Senate One-House Budget allocates a historic $1 million for resources to the transgender community; however, with states all over the country making it increasingly less safe for the transgender and gender-nonconforming community, New York can lead the way in providing vital resources.

I am proud to partner with the community and activists in calling on the Governor to include a $15M Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund in the State’s budget. ([link removed]) Investing in trans-specific services will uproot historic unequal distribution of funds, with the trans community previously receiving only $0.04 to every $100 in LGBTQ funds allocated.

The Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund will allow for tailored services and community resources to provide safety, support, and empowerment for the transgender and gender-nonconforming community.

On Transgender Day of Visibility and every day, we must recognize the struggles and disparities felt by our neighbors in this community and lift them up with resources and services so they can thrive.
