People For Supporter, As Chief Financial Officer, I have to make some pretty hard decisions about our spending. And there’s no way to sugarcoat this: our fundraising has been down – significantly. In an important election year like this, those hard decisions I just mentioned could have an impact on the direction we take as a nation and the real lives of countless Americans over a generation. We’re now just hours away from our end-of-month deadline, so I wanted to make sure you saw Ben’s message – and ask you to please chip in to fund this work that you support. Please renew your People For membership now, before tonight’s funding deadline >> Thank you for all of your generous support! – Kristen Smith, Chief Financial Officer ---[original message below]--- Dear People For Supporter, If you followed last week’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, you saw far-right senators repeatedly cross the lines of basic decency. Notably, Sen. Joe Manchin called far-right senators’ treatment of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson “disgraceful.” We need to hold far-right senators accountable for their abhorrent treatment of Judge Jackson and for abusing her confirmation hearings to advance racist and anti-LGBTQ hate. The best way to start is by preventing them from winning a majority in the rapidly approaching midterm elections. People For is building the movement to stop hate, defend democracy, and increase voter turnout – especially among the communities targeted by the Far Right’s voter suppression efforts. If you’re with us, we need to know. And we need your help in these efforts. As you know, we face a challenge this year in voter enthusiasm. We’re working hard to close that gap and energize our movement with the expertly-crafted messages and tactics proven to increase turnout. But we’re also facing the challenge of alienation and dampened enthusiasm among activists and donors. So, like many non-profit and advocacy organizations this year, our fundraising is down. And the timing couldn’t be worse. Americans reject the Far Right’s extremist agenda – from trying to destroy Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, to banning books and prohibiting the acknowledgement of LGBTQ people’s very existence. But, as they always do, the Far Right is hiding that agenda behind election-year scare tactics aimed at firing up their base and dividing Americans along racial, religious, and cultural lines – to the detriment of the country as a whole. We saw cause for hope last week. Far-right senators tried to use the Ketanji Brown Jackson hearings as a testing ground for their bigoted and dishonest rhetoric. But Americans weren’t buying it. Not only is Judge Jackson the most popular Supreme Court nominee in decades, a just-released poll from Marquette Law School shows that her approval went up – from 64% to 72% – following the hearings! It’s a sign that we can turn the conventional wisdom about historical midterm election trends on its head and stop the Far Right in this most critical election year. But it’s going to take a people-powered movement and a lot more grassroots donations than we’ve been seeing to fund the work. Thank you for everything you do. Ben Jealous, President
