California Got a "D" for Climate Action in 2021. What Happened?

2021 was the third straight year that California failed to muster up the political will to pass meaningful climate policy through the Legislature. Oil money is rampant in Sacramento, and far too many leaders have lacked the political will to boldly address the climate crisis. So, in our 2021 Environmental Scorecard, for the first time we assigned California a D grade of 67%. Watch our video to learn more about why we gave California a D grade, then search through our Scorecard to see which oil-money legislators are preventing climate action.

Getting Ready for a Month of Earth Day

At EnviroVoters, every day is Earth Day, and we’re celebrating for the whole month of April. From getting up to speed on 30x30 and the IPCC report to preparing for the upcoming midterm elections, we’ve put together some resources to read and ways to stay engaged in the fight to solve the climate crisis and protect our environment in the leadup to Earth Day on April 22.

What Is the Scoping Plan?

The Scoping Plan is a sweeping document that lays out the most cost effective and technologically feasible path for the state to reach carbon neutrality by 2045, which will be a boon to fighting climate change. Many of the programs, regulations, and policies developed in the Final 2022 Scoping Plan will have far-reaching impacts on our state in the decades to come.

EnviroVoters Launches #ClimateCourageBudget Campaign

We are urging Governor Newsom and lawmakers to double down and think bigger to pass a state budget that ensures victory in the fight against climate change and saves California for our kids. The #ClimateCourageBudget campaign is calling on state leaders to dedicate at least $75 billion over five years (a minimum of 5% of state spending) to protect our future.

EnviroVoters Announces Slate of California Endorsements

The list of EnviroVoters’ endorsements for this year’s election keeps growing. “The path to maintaining an environmental majority in Congress runs through California,” said EnviroVoters Political Director Mike Young. “California has the most competitive seats right now, and it is important our representatives continue to lead the nation in pushing for climate justice.”

Did You Know? With Unhealthy Air Up and Down the State, Most Californians Want Pollution Free Cars and Buildings

Last year, Southern California was ranked WORST in the nation for air quality, according to an Environment California-CALPIRG study. Unhealthy air impacts nearly all Californians, and is particularly damaging for lower income communities and communities of color who regularly experience even higher levels of pollution. More than two-thirds of Californians support pollution free cars and buildings. These are the kind of climate solutions we need to implement before the 2030 deadline scientists have given us to avert major catastrophe.
