Dear John,  

This morning, Twin Metals Minnesota Spokesperson Julie Padilla argued in front of a key U.S. Senate committee that our recent wins for the Boundary Waters should be rolled back, going so far as to ask Congress to “rescind the proposed mining ban.”

This is bad news for canoe country. 

Padilla was caught, once again, working against the interests of the Boundary Waters and when specifically asked if Twin Metals would pose a risk to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Padilla responded: 

“...these are industrial activities. Every human activity involves risk and so when we ask simple questions and expect a simple answer, that's a problem. When I get into a car, I choose whether to put on a seatbelt, I choose whether to take that risk and there's laws in place that determine whether I should do that or not. So when we are talking about whether an industrial project has any risk of impacting anything, certainly we have that risk.”

Padilla’s odd analogy of wearing a seatbelt shows how little regard they have for the safety of Wilderness. I wear my seatbelt in case something horribly goes wrong. I also don’t want a sulfide-ore copper mine next to the Boundary Waters because something will go wrong.

Point-blank, Padilla acknowledged that the Twin Metals sulfide-ore copper mine threatens the Boundary Waters Watershed and worse, that they are willing to risk its pollution. 

It’s clear that this is far from over. We have a historic opportunity this year to achieve not only a 20-year ban, but permanent protection for the Boundary Waters through a law passed by Congress, but we have to keep pushing against the ongoing threats from billion-dollar corporations that have no stake in the future of our Wilderness.
