Mike Espy won over 46% of the vote in Mississippi when he ran for Senate in 2018, which at the time was the closest US Senate election in Mississippi since the 1980s. His love for his home state runs deep, and I’m incredibly grateful for his support and expertise as we work together to build long-term organizing infrastructure across the Deep South.

In order to continue our work in Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, and our soon-to-be announced Plains state, we need to hit this goal before our filing deadline. We need to raise $44,323 more before midnight tonight. Can I ask you to give $27 today?

I’m Mike Espy, former Representative of Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district, the first Black person from the deep south to serve as the United States Secretary of Agriculture, and a big fan of Groundwork Project.

When I ran for Senate in 2018 and again in 2020, I knew it would be a hard road. My state has suffered under GOP control for decades — with roll backs of voting rights, reproductive health care, and support for working families.

But Mississippians aren’t giving up. We know we deserve better than the leadership we’ve been given. That’s why Groundwork Project is so important.

When I think of Mississippi I think of magnolias in bloom, our rich civil rights history, and the genuine warmth from my neighbors that northerners call “southern charm.” I think of the cultural contributions that Jackson — a city whose population is 70% Black folks — has given America like bluegrass music, rock and roll, and the rhythm and blues festival.

That is the Mississippi I know and love. Mississippians deserve leaders as compassionate, fearless, and innovative as they are. And those leaders deserve national support.

Groundwork Project is one of the only organizations out there solely focused on doing the necessary, long-term work of building a lasting political infrastructure to build power and alleviate harm caused by GOP policies in places that have been traditionally written off.
