"We will not retreat. We are the resistance."
– Sonia Guajajara, speaking at the United Nations
This year, the very survival of the Amazon and its indigenous peoples has been threatened like never before. When the rainforest burst into flames and scientists warned that it is approaching a "tipping point" of ecological collapse, you stepped up to meet this challenge in solidarity with indigenous peoples.
Together, we have already directed over 65 emergency grants to fight both physical and political fires across the Amazon. With this support, indigenous firefighters went to Brazil and Bolivia and an indigenous delegation traveled to Europe to expose the complicity of corporations and governments in the destruction of the Amazon.
There is more work to do. Right now, through the end of our Giving Tuesday campaign, every dollar that you donate will be matched up to $50,000, and every cent will be spent on our programs!
Since August, we've coordinated Global Days of Action for the Amazon, uniting thousands of people in front of Brazilian embassies and consulates and the corporate offices of conflict commodity financiers, primarily BlackRock. These actions captured global attention and raised important pressure on the forces behind the deforestation of the Amazon.
In Ecuador, we recently celebrated the retreat of Andes Petroleum from a 158,000-hectare rainforest concession known as Block 79, which overlaps the titled territory of the Sapara and Kichwa indigenous nationalities.
These victories have been hard-fought, and there is still much more to do. Recent reports have confirmed the worst for both this summer's fires and the rapid onslaught of our global climate emergency. We can't stop to rest, and we need your help to continue advancing!
We're already 42% of the way to our goal of raising $50,000 online by Giving Tuesday. Please help us get to 100%!
And if you're able, please make your donation monthly.
Thank you!
