Does access to care differ under Medicaid versus private insurance?
Medicaid provides very low– and no-cost coverage to millions of Americans who can’t afford private insurance. Yet debates surrounding the value of Medicaid versus private insurance continue. In a new P4A Spark blog post, researcher Naomi Zewde shares findings from her P4A project
examining whether private insurance provides increased access to healthcare, including insights on delivering care to people with incomes at or near the federal poverty level.
Impacts of the ACA on healthcare access and utilization for Indigenous women
Indigenous women are at increased risk for experiences with maternal morbidity and mortality. Research has shown that a lack of access to affordable, high-quality healthcare from preconception through pregnancy and postpartum is an important but modifiable risk factor. As part of our latest cohort of grantees, Claire Margerison and Danielle Gartner of Michigan State University are investigating whether the impacts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on healthcare access and utilization were equitable between Indigenous and non-Indigenous women.
Racial equity tools as a means to address structural racism
Structural racism and the social determinants of health are major influencers of health outcomes, and addressing them in policy development and implementation is crucial to reducing racial and ethnic health disparities. A new analysis of research
published in 2021 provides key insights about which cities and counties are using racial equity tools and how they’re using them to address systemic racism and the social determinants of health.
Research can influence policy and, ultimately, outcomes for the communities being studied, but crafting publications that effectively achieve this can be challenging. On April 7, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. (EDT), the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS) will host a small-group discussion, led by
Anne Ekedahl, where researchers will learn to identify and practice the format and techniques needed to develop an effective policy brief. This webinar is part of a year-long Research to Action Webinar and Discussion Series hosted by IAPHS.
