A round-up of this month's news on protecting people and the planet.

Dear John

Tomorrow’s energy price hike is going to hit all of us in the UK.

Lots of us are really worried about our bills. So if you haven’t yet it might be a good idea to submit your meter readings today ([link removed]) to avoid over-paying.

If you're interested in campaigning locally against the climate and energy crisis, our Groundswell events ([link removed]) this May and June will be a brilliant opportunity to get involved. And we’d really love to see you there – more details below.

Over the coming months there’ll be lots of other chances to confront this fossil fuel-fueled crisis together. Because the truth is the solutions are already out there – as our 5-point plan ([link removed]) shows.

In the meantime, I hope you’re staying well. And make sure to read on below. This month I’ve got some great stories to share, from climate court cases to local communities standing up for the planet. At the moment I think we all need some positive news.

LOCAL CAMPAIGNERS STOP LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT EXPANSION

Brilliant news from Yorkshire where, following years of campaigning from Friends of the Earth groups and others, Leeds Bradford Airport has withdrawn its application to expand the airport.

The application was originally approved by Leeds City Council. The expansion would have seen a new terminal and allowed the number of passengers to almost double in the next decade. So taking the plans off the table entirely is really great news for the planet. And a big win for people power.
NORTHERN IRELAND GETS ITS FIRST-EVER CLIMATE LAW
[link removed]
This month it was announced that Northern Ireland will finally get its own law to tackle climate breakdown. The soon-to-be climate change act will commit the nation to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

I’m proud to say the now strong legislation is thanks to Friends of the Earth campaigners and our allies the Northern Ireland Climate Coalition. And your support for our campaign has been incredible. Thanks so much if you spoke up. This is a history-making milestone.
BRENT GROUP PERSUADES LOCAL STORE TO STOCK PEAT-FREE
[link removed]
Thanks to amazing local campaigning from Brent Friends of the Earth, the group’s local Birchen Grove Garden Centre has agreed to promote peat-free products in the store, ahead of phasing out peat in advance of the general ban in 2024.

The centre even agreed to put up signs promoting peat-free gardening. A big win for nature, all down to the persistence and dedication of this passionate local group.

HIGH COURT JUDGES SPLIT ON MOZAMBIQUE RULING
[link removed]
Last year we took the UK government to court for financing a multimillion pound gas mega project in Mozambique.

And finally, we have news to share. Judges have just announced their decision – and it’s split. One of them ruled the government’s decision was unlawful but the other disagreed, with the next stage being an appeal.

Watch our video to find out why we launched this case in the first place – and learn more about some of the already devastating impacts of the gas project for local Mozambicans.

[link removed]
To mark International Women's Day this month, we celebrated some of the extraordinary women ([link removed]) who've championed climate and nature both globally and in their local communities.

Find out how Friends of the Earth International’s work combines the fight for the environment with gender justice – taking on the systems that devalue and exploit women, communities and our natural world.
