Dear John,
Not long ago, hardly anyone had ever heard of TikTok, least of all me.
But in less than a year, Inequality Media Civic Action has reached a huge milestone there: nearly half a million followers, 7.5 million likes, and tens of millions of views.
Why does this matter? Because TikTok is the single most downloaded app in the world. It's where young people get their information, especially 18- to 25-year-olds, who will dominate U.S. elections by 2028. This is why the GOP is banning books and screaming about critical race theory. They're terrified of a progressive generation that's unafraid to speak truth to power.
And unlike Facebook, where conservatives have had an advantage over progressives for years, TikTok is a vast corner of the internet where the right wing is barely even making a dent. Yet.
We've built this enormous following on a shoestring budget with a small but mighty creative team. While I focus more on the latest economic data and political developments, the Inequality Media Civic Action team is wired into the rapidly changing trends on TikTok and experimenting every day with new content to engage young people and others who generally tune out traditional politics.
Will you help us continue to grow our movement for progressive change on TikTok and across social media by making a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action today?
Why does TikTok work so well for us? Because Gen Z has, understandably, grown up skeptical of mainstream media and established authority. They know how broken our system is and see right through the typical political spin.
Authenticity is key, as well as humor, because a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. We test out what works and what doesn't, tracking results carefully, and learning how to get our message out in the language of today's social media ecosystem. And if the team suggests I dance, draw cartoons, or read The Canterbury Tales in Middle English, I'll do it. If doing so helps young people's minds open for even just an instant, it's an opportunity.
We're also growing fast on other social media platforms. On Facebook, we're among the top six progressive pages for total engagement — higher even than Barack Obama. And we get far more engagement per post than right-wing trashmongers like Ben Shapiro with posts that are targeted and substantive.
The tiny, nimble team at Inequality Media Civic Action is constantly innovating, testing new messages and using cutting-edge analytics to grow our audience on TikTok, Facebook, and other social media platforms. That's why I know that there's no more effective place to donate to help make progressive change than here.
If you can, please make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help this incredible team continue to build support for the progressive movement and communicate with young people.
Thanks for helping us spread the truth,
Robert Reich
