Dear John,
The annual dinner of CRIF, the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions, is like no other Jewish communal event. Each year the President of France and the President of CRIF address topics of the highest priority to the Jewish community: security, antisemitism, Israel and the state of Jewish life in France.

This year the dinner occurred on a day of global crisis as Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, so Prime Minister Jean Castex substituted for President Emmanuel Macron, who headed to an urgent EU summit in Brussels. Despite the emergency situation, nearly two-thirds of the government ministers still joined the Jewish community for the event, as did dozens of diplomats and representatives of Muslim communities, the Catholic Church and others. I had the honor of representing ADL and the opportunity to exchange views about antisemitism with Prime Minister Castex.
This convergence of events in France and in the Ukraine is just part of a full plate of concerns that we are addressing as part of the ADL community, along with supporting diplomatic progress for Israel at the same time terrorism exerts a deadly toll in recent days, weighing in on nuclear negotiations with Iran, tracking antisemitic extremists in Scandinavia and countering antisemitism on campus and in law enforcement in Colombia.
UKRAINE
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has to date resulted in over 1,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths and has forced over 3.7 million Ukrainians to flee the country, has rightly captured everyone’s attention, and ADL has kept you informed since day one of the crisis. Our initial

statement debunked the ludicrous Russian stated war aim of “de-nazifying” Ukraine. We followed up with a

piece further explaining why Putin accused the Ukrainian government of being Nazis, which was posted on our

We encourage you to watch the recordings from a fascinating ADL-hosted discussion about Ukraine; you can hear from

ISRAEL

celebrated the historic Negev Summit that Israel hosted with the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, the UAE and US Secretary of State Blinken. This type of summit would have been unimaginable over the past 70 years, and it is encouraging to see Arab countries engaging Israel for peaceful diplomatic efforts to build a safer, more connected world. The summit came amidst sobering reminders of the urgent need for peace and the ongoing risk of extremist violence faced by Israel, as terrorist shootings in

IRAN
Regarding Iran, ADL is closely monitoring conversations surrounding a potential US return to the nuclear deal. In an op-ed, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt

calls on the US to develop a multi-track process to deal with Iran including a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to Iranian terror activities — including denying sanctions relief to convicted terrorists — as well as a process focused on human rights and Iranian security and an effort to lift up Iranian voices opposed to the regime’s human rights abuses and tyrannical practices.

A new ADL

report was just released on the Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM), the region’s most dangerous neo-Nazi right wing extremist group that has a history of harassing Jewish communities in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. The report describes the history, antisemitic ideology and violent actions of the group and makes recommendations for governments to better counter this major extremist group, which has links to American white supremacists, including with Matthew Heimbach of the Traditionalist Workers Party, who said he modeled the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia on NRM organizing.
COLOMBIA
Liat Altman, our Director of Latin America Affairs, discussed antisemitism at a workshop organized by the Jewish Community of Colombia as part of a series of workshops taking place at police academies throughout the country in response to an

In these challenging times, ADL’s International Affairs division continues to fight antisemitism and take on other world issues with staff on three continents using high-level advocacy, the export of proven education programs and new research partnerships to expand the boundaries of our impact.
