Hi John,

I’m Zach Wahls and I’m the Iowa Senate Democratic Leader. You may know me from a speech on family I gave a few years ago while I was advocating for marriage equality in Iowa.

Now it’s my job to put Democrats back on the path to retake the majority in the Iowa State Senate.

Let me tell you why that is important— even if you’re not from Iowa. Democrats need to win the heartland to be able to enact our progressive values into law. Narrow majorities in Congress aren’t enough to pass a bold, progressive agenda— and our work at the local level helps to turnout more Democrats in presidential and U.S. Senate elections.

In fact, a recent study showed that down-ballot Democrats in state legislative races improved Joe Biden’s performance by up to 1.5% in 2020. That’s a higher percentage than his margin of victory in the three states that delivered his electoral college win: Wisconsin, Arizona, and Georgia.

We’re engaging with folks in Iowa and all across the country to learn how we can do a better job of winning elections and ultimately Iowa from red to blue.

I don’t have to tell you that it has been a rough few years for Iowa Democrats. When I was elected leader, we wasted no time digging into every process and turning over every rock to figure out how we can better serve the people of Iowa. We conducted a comprehensive debrief of the 2020 election to learn from our mistakes, and we gathered feedback from dozens of candidates, staff, voters, volunteers, and contributors.

Part of that feedback was how we can better engage you— our grassroots supporters across Iowa and the rest of the country. We cannot retake the majority in the State Senate without you; we must compete everywhere and for every vote, and we can only do that by placing a new emphasis on listening to the concerns of everyday Iowans.

In that spirit, we’re re-launching a brand-new Senate Majority Fund email program. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably getting lots of political emails. Our approach is going to be different. We want you to be a part of this team. That starts today.
