This month, we fought hard to support the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, and People For President Ben Jealous warned of the rising tide of authoritarianism in the United States. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The week of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing started with a joyful rally on the steps of the Supreme Court. While People For President Ben Jealous prepared to attend opening day inside the Senate, People For staff and members gathered among the crowd to celebrate Judge Jackson’s nomination.

Rev. Leslie Watson Wilson, National Director of People For’s African American Religious Affairs, fired up the crowd at the start of the rally, proclaiming our joy and gratitude to be together in this historic moment.

The Far Right’s racism, misogyny, and bigotry were on full display during Judge Jackson’s hearings, with Sen. Ted Cruz attempting to tie her to critical race theory by holding up a book from a private school where she serves on the board, and Sen. Tom Cotton repeatedly attacking her sentencing of sexual offenders in a line of questioning that even the conservative National Review called “meritless to the point of demagoguery.”

After the rightward swing of the courts during Trump’s presidency, President Biden has made remarkable progress in rebalancing our judiciary at the lower levels since he came into office. But all of that progress will come to a screeching halt this fall if extremists like Cruz and Cotton regain the Senate majority in the midterm elections.

While People For has worked tirelessly to spread the word of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s excellent qualifications to serve as our country’s next Supreme Court justice, we have ensured that peoples’ individual perspectives and stories are centered throughout.

In particular, we wanted to show how much a Justice Jackson would mean to different communities and across generations. This month, we’ve produced videos that focus on the rights of people with disabilities and on what this means to young people, particularly those of color. Immediately after President Biden announced his Supreme Court nomination of Judge Jackson, People For hosted a supporter-exclusive virtual event. People For supporters joined us for an important discussion featuring special guest Elie Mystal, justice correspondent for The Nation and a former litigator, alongside People For President Ben Jealous and our courts experts.

The lively conversation covered Judge Jackson’s sterling qualifications, what this historic moment means for people across the country, and how everyone can get involved to ensure that Judge Jackson has a swift and fair confirmation process. Tune in below to see some of the event’s highlights!

Anti-democratic authoritarianism is on the rise—both around the world and here at home. Americans don’t often recognize authoritarianism at home because they don’t want to. “Black Americans have never had a problem seeing the threat,” writes People For President Ben Jealous.

As the national conversation has been consumed by Vladimir Putin’s needless, vicious war in Ukraine, Jealous has written extensively on the way that this global conversation reflects on the dangers our American democracy currently faces. From the Right’s relentless attacks on the freedom to vote to former President Trump’s attacks on our fair elections, there has been a lot to talk about—particularly about what comes next.
