John -- I grew up in the Alaska public school system, and if it wasn't for my middle school biology teacher, I might not be an orthopedic surgeon today. Monica and I proudly sent our children to Alaska public schools. Today I'm deeply worried about the future of education in Alaska and across the country. In Washington D.C., Education Secretary Betsy DeVos advocates for cutting education funding and programs nationwide, and she has a strong ally in Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, who proposed more than $314 million in public school funding cuts last February. Last summer Dunleavy used his veto pen to eliminate $130 million for higher education and the University of Alaska declared a fiscal emergency. While some proposed cuts have been postponed, the university is losing teachers and programs are being eliminated. And our K-12 educators fear what Dunleavy and DeVos will eliminate next. It's the wrong direction for our future. I'll be a Senator who focuses efforts on enriching our children's educational opportunities -- not outside special interests. But I want to know what you think. Are you worried about public education in Alaska and across the country? Take our survey right now.
Thank you,
