Washington, DC - OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates sends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the Hmong American family targeted in the mass shooting in Fresno, CA, on Sunday. OCA mourns the tragic loss to the community and the continuing epidemic of gun violence.

The tragedy was made even more painful by thoughtless language that CNN and other media used in initial reports on the horrific night. Calling a mass shooting an “American milestone” is morally frightening, devaluing the lives lost while also stereotyping the Hmong American family as a “perpetual foreigner.” OCA calls on media to be more mindful and less sensational when reporting on such tragedies, to respect and support the community still grieving from this tragic occurrence.

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
