Airport workers rally today

Airport workers across the country are taking action today, demanding good jobs. Locally the action is at 11:30a at DCA (see Calendar). "We're tired of airlines driving a race to the bottom!" the workers, members of SEIU, say. "We call on CEOs to commit to ending poverty jobs NOW and make US Airports #GoodAirports!" Find out morehttp://goodairports.org/ here.

DC housekeepers protest

Hotel workers, members of UNITE HERE Local 25, protested at the Washington Hilton earlier this week "to let guests know that the hotel has cut automatic daily housekeeping, which has been devastating for workers." The Hilton has cut automatic daily room cleaning, which is costing housekeepers hours and pay. "Please ask the front desk for your room to be cleaned daily to save jobs and get the services you paid for!" the union urges.

MontCo Council approves Prevailing Wage expansion
The Montgomery County Council last week unanimously enacted legislation expanding Montgomery County's prevailing wage requirements. The legislation "ensures more workers have the opportunity to earn a family-supporting wage in Montgomery County and continue contributing to the County by working on projects that benefit all residents," said Baltimore-D.C. Metro Building and Construction Trades Council (BDCBT) President Stephen Courtien. "This legislation will incentivize good jobs, strong apprenticeship training, and help build a thriving regional economy," Executive Vice President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Metropolitan Washington Thomas Bello said. "We appreciate the opportunity to work with Councilmembers Tom Hucker and Will Jawando and thank the entire Council for voting to pass this important legislation." Read more [link removed] here.
NOTE: Tune in to the WPFW Your Rights At Work radio show tomorrow at 1p to hear BDCBT President Stephen Courtien discuss this issue.

Today's Labor Quote: D. Taylor

"It is by remembering our past that we prepare to fight for our future. We're measured by how we protect the most vulnerable and ensure their health and safety to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that is our guiding light."

Taylor is president of UNITE HERE, remembering the garment workers who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire on March 25, 1911.
