Dear John,

Help us stop NW Natural from raising gas customer rates by $81 million! Take action here.

We’re living through the end of a pandemic, with the climate crisis growing more extreme around us. Wages are stagnant. The cost of living is rising. Meanwhile NW Natural is out there threatening to increase rates and trying to make even more of a profit off of fossil fuels while the rest of us struggle to get by. The rate hike would result in an 11.8% bill increase for residential customers, leading to economic hardship for a lot of families who are already struggling.

And what would this price increase go toward? Increasing executive salaries, creating new fossil fuel infrastructure, and increasing investor profits. Natural gas–also known as methane gas–is a polluting fossil fuel that contributes to climate change, and is extracted through the hydraulic fracturing process, or “fracking.” Fracking contaminates groundwater and pollutes the air with methane–a potent greenhouse gas. We need to move beyond fossil fuels, not keep investing in them.

Luckily, because NW Natural asked the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) to approve this rate hike, there’s still time to send a public comment until March 31st, asking them to deny the proposal. Please send an email to the PUC and let them know you oppose the rate hike!

Thank you,

Julia DeGraw
