Republicans have locked in their strategy for taking back the House in November: Go after Democrats in districts where Trump won in 2020.

These are districts held by NewDems including Tom O’Halleran in AZ-02 (a Trump +8 district) and Cindy Axne in IA-03 (a Trump +.04 district). POLITICO’s latest analysis of the 2022 elections calls these NewDem districts “the most politically hazardous place to be for the midterms.”

Back in 2010, Republicans used this exact strategy to take back the House from Democrats. When Republicans swept the 2010 midterm elections, their candidates beat 36 of the nearly 50 Democrats sitting in John McCain-won seats.

Thankfully, Democrats are in a MUCH different position this cycle – it’s likely that fewer than a dozen Democrats will have to defend districts Trump won this cycle. But we also know that our politics have become even more polarized, giving rise to a record number of extreme candidates like Republican Ron Watkins, the QAnon leader running to defeat NewDem Tom O’Halleran in Arizona.

We can’t let them win, team.
