John,

We’ve got terrible news. The Great Barrier Reef is experiencing one of the worst mass-bleaching events in its history – and it’s happening during a La Niña year when temperatures should be cooler.

Following extensive aerial surveys over the past few weeks, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority just confirmed widespread and severe bleaching across the world’s largest coral reef system. This is the sixth mass-bleaching the reef has undergone in its history.

According to the Australian Institute of Marine Science, “more than half of the living coral cover that we can see from the air is severely bleached completely white.”

Bleaching is a natural response that occurs when corals are under stress due to rising ocean temperatures. When corals get too hot, they expel zooxanthellae, the algae that provides them with their vibrant colors, exposing their white skeletons. While bleached corals have a chance to recover, they are at a much higher risk of death due to disease or starvation.

Some minor bleaching during the warmer summer months each year is normal. But this is the first time we are seeing mass-bleaching occur during a La Niña weather event , which is normally a time when ocean temperatures cool due to rain and cloud cover over the reef.

The reason is simple: rising global temperatures due to climate change are making these bleaching events more frequent and more severe.

John, we need SEEC members in Congress who will fight to save natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef. Can you contribute right away to help elect more SEEC members to take on this fight? [[link removed]]

Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
