Opening up more U.S. land and water to drilling will do nothing to lower costs - especially since the oil and gas industry in Pennsylvania already hasn't drilled 40% of the wells they have permits for. Fossil fuels are connected to a global market influenced by worldwide supply, demand, and unpredictable events, not a few new leases and permits in the U.S - and the increased prices at the pump are caused by autocrats like Vladimir Putin, the greed of oil and gas CEOs, and their enabling allies in the state legislature.
Simply put, we can't drill our way out of high gas prices.
The only real, long-term solution to high, unreliable energy costs is investing in made-in-America renewable energy. A clean energy economy will provide greater economic stability, lower energy costs, and protect our national and climate security.
But that’s not what these proposals are calling for. They’re calling for drilling on state lands. They want to keep Pennsylvania out of a multi-state program that makes polluters pay their fair share and invests in local communities. They want to start fracking in the Delaware River Basin. They even called on the governors of New York and New Jersey to reverse their bans on new natural gas pipelines.
We’ve got to call this agenda what it is — a shameless attempt to make the rich richer that will increase climate pollution and have devastating health impacts on communities, especially Indigenous communities and communities of color who are disproportionately impacted by fossil fuel infrastructure. And most notably, will do little to reign in the high gas prices Pennsylvania families are struggling with or stymie Vladimir Putin.
Please join us in urging state leaders to halt any legislation that exploits the devastating Ukraine crisis for oil and gas companies bottom lines. Send your message now >>
Thanks for all that you do.
