How 2 Industries Stymied Justice for Young Lead Paint Victims
Today, the New York Times ([link removed]) published a comprehensive article on the insurance and real estate industries’ campaign to avoid liability in lead cases. The NYS Assembly passed A.7488 which will close the insurance loophole. Thank you Assemblymember Demond Meeks for your co-sponsorship of this bill. Thank you Assemblymember Sarah Clark for your support of A.7488 ([link removed]) and kudos to Lead Free Kids NY for their ongoing advocacy on this issue. Unfortunately, the NY Senate has yet to pass the Senate version of this bill, S.3079a ([link removed]) .
We are grateful for Senator Samra Brouk’s co-sponsorship of S.3079a and for Senator Sean Ryan’s leadership on addressing what he saw as a major factor in the lead crisis: insurance exclusions. Not only do insurance exclusions prevent children from being compensated, they reduced landlords’ accountability. “Insurance is often part of the solution to keeping homes safe,” Mr. Ryan said. "Taxpayers are paying a great amount of money every year to treat victims of lead poisoning,” he added, “and that cost should be borne by the property owner and insurance company.”

Lead Brochures & Monroe County Healthy Home Guides Available!
The Coalition has two amazing resources that we would love to share with our community! The first is our Lead Brochure which provides information about lead poisoning prevention and resources for Monroe County. We have copies in English, Spanish, Dari, Karen, Chinese, Nepali, Farsi, Arabic, and Somali.
We also have copies of the Monroe County Healthy Home Guides. These guides include information about various hazards in the home such as lead, chemicals, asthma hazards, and more. The guides provide advice and resources for all these hazards as well as some legal/financial resources and information on nutrition.
