** Water Defender Bernardo Caal Xol Released from Prison
------------------------------------------------------------

Bernardo Caal Xol (Q'eqchi' Maya), one of the most recognized Guatemalan environmental land leaders, was released from prison on March 24, 2022, after a judge declared him innocent. ** Climate Change Outlook Is Dire; Indigenous Peoples’ Self-Determination Is Fundamental to Possibilities for Resilience

On February 27, 2022, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the second installment of its Sixth Assessment Report on Climate Change. The 3,675-page report comprehensively analyzes the global climate emergency in the context of different regions, ecosystem types, and thematic areas such as livelihoods, health, and infrastructure. ** Rough Road to Justice in Nepal: The Case of Raj Kumar Chepang
------------------------------------------------------------

On February 20, 2022, the Patan Appellate Court sentenced Chiran Kumar Budha, a sergeant in the Nepal Army, to lifetime imprisonment (25 years as per Criminal Code 2017) for beating to death 24-year-old Raj Kumar Chepang (Chepang) from Pipal Milan Chowk Ward, Rapti Municipality-2, Chitwan, in 2020. ** The Convention on Biological Diversity and Indigenous Peoples

On March 14-29, 2022, the Convention on Biological Diversity's third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation will be taking place in Geneva, Switzerland. Cultural Survival's Indigenous Rights Radio took the opportunity to interview Indigenous leaders about the Convention and about how Indigenous Peoples are involved in the implementation of this important international, multilateral treaty. ** International Day of Forests: KOEF Grant Partners Protecting Lands

On March 21, 2012, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 21 as International Day of Forests to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
