John, Tynemouth Market in North Shields hosts a trader who displays a number of owls, including a barn owl called Willow and an eagle owl called Mr Wilson. The trader is called 'Mr Wilson and Friends' and they display the owls next to their stall with items for sale.
In exchange for money, members of the public can have a photograph taken whilst holding one of the owls. For the majority of the day, the owls are tethered to a perch waiting to be handled by the next market visitor.
Tied down by their legs, these birds are denied the freedom for flight, something that is so important to a bird. Instead they are made to endure the crowds of shoppers and noise of a busy market.
We are calling on Tynemouth Market to remove this trader from their events.
But we need your help to make that happen! Please will you contact the market here and add your voice to the campaign? We have provided a template email so it just takes a minute to add your name and email:
