Today, November 20, is the 20th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today we honor the memory of the transgender people who lost their lives in acts of anti-transgender violence.

This year, at least 22 transgender or gender non-conforming people were killed by acts of hate. The Human Rights Campaign released a report on Monday that calls the situation a national epidemic, drawing attention to the toxic intersection of racism, sexism, transphobia, and ease of access to guns. And this epidemic affects trans women of color at a terrifying rate.

We cannot allow this violence to continue.

I support a simple principle: all Americans should be free from discrimination. That includes discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Lately, that means resisting the Trump administration's hateful policies.

The Trump administration has worked tirelessly to marginalize the LGBTQ+ community. They want to:
- dismiss transgender Americans from the military;
- attempt to erase 1.4 million transgender Americans by defining gender as fixed at their sex at birth; and
- threaten to prevent LGBTQ+ families from adopting.

I've challenged Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, to reinstate protections for transgender students, and I've introduced legislation to expand protections of elder LGBTQ+ Americans. I will continue to challenge this administration on discrimination until we have a government that truly stands with and is representative of all Americans.
