The ways in which the American Far Right has been cozying up to foreign
dictators and advocating for authoritarian solutions here at home are
stunning.

After Russian dictator Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, Tucker Carlson –
Fox News’s most popular voice – showered praise on him, insisted that
invasion was no big deal, and quickly became the darling of Russian state
propaganda outlets.

Just this past weekend, former President Trump again referred to Putin as
“smart” and – from Viktor Orban in Hungary to North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un –
seems pathetically unable to utter anything but lavish praise for
dictators who jail dissidents, attack the free press, and rig elections.

And Nick Fuentes – a leading far-right figure who organized the
white-nationalist America First Political Action Conference in late
February, which was attended by at least two sitting U.S. Representatives
– led a round of applause for Putin at the conference and later declared
that Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine was “not aggression.”

The
ascendant Far Right is working to seize control of our government.  Their
embrace of fascism and authoritarianism is unprecedented, dangerous, and –
if not checked soon – poses a fundamental threat to American democracy
itself.
