Project Title: Indigenous First Steps: Students, Family, Culture, Community (IFS-FCC)

“I am deeply honored to be selected as a Young Scholar this year and for the Foundation for Child Development's investment in decolonizing online early childhood education. The Young Scholars program creates spaces for early-career scholars to join a robust academic community dedicated to addressing issues of equity by building a body of research that creates change in our field. I am so grateful for the funding that supports the Oregon Tribal Early Learning partnerships that elevate Indigenous Knowledges and values in online education and professional development platforms.”

Project Title: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Describe the Implementation of Cultural Approaches During Classroom-Focused Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation

“I am honored to have been selected for the Young Scholars Program 2022 cohort for so many reasons. The most important reason is the privilege of carrying on the legacy of my ancestors, particularly Amos Wilson, through research that seeks to deepen the field's collective understanding of the emotional histories and experiences of Black, Indigenous, Latino, immigrant, and multilingual children, and children with disabilities who have been racialized. Also, I am looking forward to growing my research skills, and the mentorship and networking that this opportunity will provide.”

Project Title: Having Their Say: What Programs and Policies Do Unlisted Home-Based Child Care Workers Want to Support Their Work With Young Children?

“Unlisted, unpaid home-based ECE care providers are essential members of the ECE workforce who are too often overlooked. I'm excited to start my interviews and focus groups with them, to hear all of the expertise that they have to share about how policies, programs, and public funds can be better used to support their work with young children. I am honored that through the Young Scholars Program, I will be able to uplift and amplify their policy recommendations in public policy and program spaces.”

Project Title: What Drives Racial/Ethnic Disparities in School Discipline? Understanding Mechanisms to Inform Policy and Program Solutions

“I am honored to be a part of the Young Scholars Program of the Foundation for Child Development, where I have already begun to meet some of the smartest and kindest people doing research to improve the lives of young children. I am thrilled to get to carry out my research to help understand the mechanisms driving racial/ethnic disparities in school discipline and to work with my school partners to help devise strategies to reduce these disparities. I am equally looking forward to learning from my fellow Young Scholars and others affiliated with the Foundation.”
