Poynter hosted 25 new managers in Washington, D.C., March 21 through March 25, 2022, for the popular leadership program, Essential Skills for Rising Newsroom Leaders. (Credit: Joe Newman) |
When someone gets promoted to management, it's easy to say "congrats!" and move on. But new roles can feel lonely, confusing, overwhelming or just plain hard. Poynter's leadership program for new managers offers real support for those in new roles, and we're excited for our latest class to return to their newsrooms this week with new skills and confidence.
"I learned that great leaders are excellent coaches, not just fixers," said Brady McCombs, Rockies news editor at The Associated Press and new Poynter grad. "This is the best training I’ve ever attended in my career spanning two decades. I appreciate this opportunity and will reap the benefits from what I learned this week for the rest of my career."
"I like knowing that if I feel stagnant or something is bothering me at work that I can always refer to Poynter and know that you will have an article or a workshop," said Paula Kirsic, senior news producer at Telemundo Network and new Poynter grad. "It won't feel like a burden but an investment in my career."
Are you ready to invest in your career? If you're a new manager, you can apply now for our next Essential Skills program in December. Keep scrolling for more opportunities.

Immigration’s Impact on the U.S. Economic Recovery
|
Webinar, April 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern
Despite surging job growth and higher wages year-over-year, most Americans don’t believe the U.S. economy is strong. Worker shortages and supply chain disruptions complicate the COVID-19 economic recovery. Some industries that rely heavily on immigrant labor, such as restaurants, dairy farmers, meatpackers and health care, can’t hire enough workers to keep up with demand and wind up raising prices.
Tune in to this free webinar from Poynter to explore the connection between the pandemic-era economy and the role of immigrant workers in your community. Veteran journalist Ray Suarez will moderate the conversation with journalism educator Zita Arocha, director of the Migration Policy Institute Muzaffar Chishti, Idaho Dairymen’s Association CEO Rick Naerebout, and director of the Center for the United States and Mexico at Rice University Tony Payan.
Cost: Free, thanks to support from the Catena Foundation. |
Transforming Crime Reporting Into Public Safety Journalism |
Online group seminar, May 10-Aug. 2

This new online group seminar from the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership at Poynter will help local newsrooms fix crime reporting by embracing the best practices of public safety journalism.
Cost: $500. Limited need-based scholarships are available.
