John,
Women’s History Month was first officially celebrated in the United States in March 1982 as Women’s History Week. In 1987, at the request of the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed a resolution to declare March Women’s History Month. Since that time, each president has signed the resolution on an annual basis to continue the tradition of Women’s History Month celebrations.
This Women’s History Month is a special one. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, just concluded her confirmation hearings. To date, only five women have served on the highest court in the land, none of them Black women. Judge Jackson’s nomination and, potentially, her voice on the court will move the needle for both gender and racial equity.

Judge Jackson’s life story is the story of America. As the daughter of Florida public school teachers, a proud public school graduate and a member of a law enforcement family, her character, integrity and experience make her uniquely qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. Based on her impressive judicial record, extensive knowledge and particular understanding of the laws affecting working people, it is no surprise that Judge Jackson has been called “an unwavering voice for justice and fairness.”
This legacy of justice was on brilliant display last week during the Judiciary Committee hearings. As Sen. Cory Booker so perfectly said, Judge Jackson handled her hearings, and the sometimes abrasive questioning, with “grit and grace.” Questions from Sens. Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn and Josh Hawley were insulting in the face of such clear excellence. Instead of asking good faith questions, these senators used this historic hearing to further their culture wars with abrasive, inappropriate questions. Their goal was to cause Judge Jackson to act out of character, but instead she showed exactly why she has the perfect temperament for a position on the Supreme Court.
We need justices on the Supreme Court who have a demonstrated commitment to equal justice under the law, someone who will ensure that our rights are protected and can keep calm while helping to decide the fate of our country at this important crossroads. Judge Jackson’s judicial record upholds that ideal. Judge Jackson will be a justice for all.

In unity,
Randi Weingarten
