MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS March 22 - 28, 2022 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Thursday, North Korea test-fired possibly its biggest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) toward the sea in what would be its first such test since 2017. South Korea's military responded with live-fire drills of its own missiles launched from land vehicles, aircraft, and a ship, underscoring a revival of tensions as nuclear negotiations remain frozen. South Korea said it confirmed readiness to execute precision strikes against North Korea's missile launch points as well as command and support facilities. Also on Thursday, three U.S. officials disclosed an assessment that Russia is suffering failure rates as high as 60% for some of the precision-guided missiles it is using to attack Ukraine. The disclosure could help explain why Russia has failed to achieve what most could consider basic objectives since its invasion a month ago, such as neutralizing Ukraine's air force, despite the apparent strength of its military against Ukraine's much smaller armed forces. On Sunday, Russia targeted the western Ukrainian city of Lviv with cruise missiles, the Russian defense minister announced. Russian forces struck a fuel facility near Lviv being used by the Ukrainian military with high-precision long-range missiles and used cruise missiles to strike a plant in the city being used to fix anti-aircraft systems, radar stations, and tank sights.
