While attacks on civil liberties often end up in Congress and the courts, they frequently begin in state legislatures.

That's exactly what we're seeing nationwide as we confront a wave of vicious assaults on our civil liberties. My state of South Dakota is only one prime example – as cruel attacks targeting transgender youth, anti-abortion measures that force people to carry pregnancies against their will, and classroom censorship that seek to eliminate Indigenous topics from our history have all recently made their way into bills across our state.

What happens in the next few months on these and many other issues will have a deep and lasting impact on people's lives – here in South Dakota and around the country. That's why we're determined to prove once again that we have the range, strength, and expertise to turn back attacks on our civil liberties and create a more just and equitable America. You know already that South Dakota's Governor Kristi Noem signed a bill into law that bans trans youth from school sports earlier this year. While it was the first anti-trans bill passed in 2022, it's far from an isolated incident.

In fact, over 100 anti-trans laws were proposed in 35 states around the country last year alone. The attacks differ – some would ban access to health care, some take aim at participation in school sports, and others would make it harder for trans people to get accurate state IDs.

But each one represents a cruel, coordinated effort to erase, harm, and exclude trans people from participation in all aspects of public life.

Most recently, we're pursuing legal action in Texas to prevent the state from investigating families for supporting their trans kids – and are preparing to fight back in Arizona and Alabama should bills banning healthcare for trans youth move forward in both states. Meanwhile, we've also blocked anti-transgender laws in Idaho, Arkansas, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

But, the reality is this is one of the most relentless state-by-state attacks on our fundamental freedoms we've ever experienced. And if we're going to continue responding on the ground – here in South Dakota and around the country – we urgently need your help.
