Dear reader,

Missouri has been slipping away from Democrats for years. In 2006, there
were five statewide elected Democrats; today there's one, and she was
demolished in the governor's race two years ago.

Enter Lucas Kunce, an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran running for the
U.S. Senate on an economic populist platform, attacking Wall Street
raiders, monopolies, and oligarchs that have stripped Missouri for
parts. Prospect Writing Fellow Lee Harris spent three days crisscrossing
Missouri with Kunce, from farm towns to the state capital of Jefferson
City to an all-Black town in the Bootheel called Hayti Heights where the
mayor has to hand-crank gas-powered motors to get the sewage system
moving.

Amid this precarity, Kunce lays out his vision for bringing a Marshall
Plan to the Midwest. Can it work? Can he rally skeptical voters to his
side by naming common foes and common interests? You can decide for
yourself.
