Dear John,
I joined a bipartisan delegation to Poland and Germany to discuss Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
There is good and evil in this world, and my Senate colleagues and I saw that firsthand with Putin’s war of aggression against the people of Ukraine.
Meeting with U.S. military leaders, NATO forces and non-government organizations (NGO) in Poland and Germany allowed us to gain greater insight into Russia’s invasion, including the terrible humanitarian crisis that it has created and the importance of having a strong military and energy security.
During this visit, I met with U.S. military Special Operations Command including two Montanans serving in special ops in Germany.
I also met with Ukrainian civil society organizations and leaders to gain a greater insight about how resources are getting to the Ukrainian people to help fight Russia and what military aid and weapons are needed.
Additionally, we heard from U.S. military leaders and NATO forces in a battle update briefing and met with NGOs providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
I saw first hand the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis caused by Putin’s war against the Ukrainian people. We visited a refugee processing center which is the first point of entry for many of the 2.2 million Ukrainians who have fled Ukraine to Poland.
In Berlin, I visited the Brandenburg Gate where in 1987 President Reagan delivered his historic speech where he told former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to ‘tear down this wall’ and achieve peace through strength.
That message rings true today.
We must continue to stand with the people of Ukraine and help bring about peace through strength.
Sincerely,
Senator Steve Daines
