Update: Rent control is heading to the ballot in Pasadena

In the last six months, over 300 volunteers have gathered 15,352 valid signatures to get rent control and evictions protections on the ballot in Pasadena—only 13,366 were needed! Today the campaign and coalition partners, including DSA-LA, submitted the signatures to the Pasadena City Clerk.

ICYMI: How Charter Schools are Segregating LA panel discussion

Last week, the Green New Deal 4 Public Schools campaign hosted a town hall discussion to assess how charter schools have expanded over the last two decades, diverted public funding away from traditional public schools, and exacerbated racial and class disparities in educational outcomes. Over 50 people attended! You can watch a recording of the event here:

Mutual Aid Committee Meeting

TODAY! Monday, March 28 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join the Mutual Aid Committee for our twice-monthly committee meeting, where we’ll be discussing ongoing and upcoming committee work, as well as helping folks get plugged into other work throughout the city. New members always welcome!

Mutual Aid Committee meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month.

Political Education Committee March Meeting

TODAY! Monday, March 28 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The DSA-LA Political Education Committee is charged with developing educational material that prepares members to analyze political terrain, think strategically, and expand the reach of our politics in Los Angeles County. We strongly believe education to be a social practice, where strong politics are built not through lecture and memorization but by providing spaces where ideas can be shared and questions solved in a collaborative manner.

The monthly committee meeting is open to all members to join. We will be discussing our committee’s current projects, including:

– Our upcoming Night School covering the history of Black Leftist Thought

– Our neighborhood learning modules covering our two major chapter campaigns, Childcare for All and the Green New Deal for Public Schools.

We will also be discussing other potential events and projects. If you are interested in participating in our work please feel welcome to join!

Political Education Facilitator Training

Tuesday, March 29 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Facilitator Training, hosted by the Political Education Committee, will teach you techniques for leading groups discussions, both online and in person. This session will be especially geared towards those interested in participating in our upcoming Night School starting April 5th, A Study Series on Black Leftist Thought.

The key questions that will be answered by this training are:

  • Why is political education important?
  • What is the role of the facilitator?
  • What are concrete tools to facilitate?
  • How can I address common roadblocks to a conversation that flows?

The skills and tools covered in this training are applicable in any meeting where participants will be discussing new ideas, so we welcome anyone interested in learning more about facilitation.

Participants are encouraged to read through this short article on the importance of Political Education before the training.

Climate Justice Chatterbox

Tuesday, March 29 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This week we will discuss one of my favorite pamphlets, The Two Souls of Socialism by Hal Draper. In 30 short pages Hal Draper contrasts socialism by the people, from below, versus a variety of top down socialisms from above. This is a crucial framework for understanding how to pursue reforms (such as LA decarbonization) as a path to socialism from below and not fall into the trap of socialism from above.

Can a Just Energy Transition Occur Under Capitalism?: What We Need to Know About Electrifying Los Angeles.

Wednesday, March 30 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

What do we need to know about the electrification of Los Angeles, can we equitably transition away from fossil fuels, and is sweeping change possible within our capitalist system?

Join us for a one-hour presentation on these topics and more, as we are joined by three speakers: Dr. Stephanie Pincetl, Founding Director and Professor at UCLA’s California Center for Sustainable Communities; Professor David Klein, an organizer with the DSA-LA Climate Justice Committee; and an organizer from Sunrise Movement Los Angeles.

Dr. Pincetl will give an “Electrification 101”: speaking about California’s electric grid, the challenges in electrifying, retrofitting, the infrastructure of utility companies and regulators, and capacities for change.

David Klein will kick things off by giving an overview of recent data of the climate crisis, and how capitalism ties into the worsening of the climate conditions. After Prof. Klein, a representative from Sunrise Movement L.A will share how a Just Transition, generating local power from renewable energy, and electrification are a central part of the Green New Deal.

This live stream can be viewed on any of DSA-LA’s social media channels on the day of the event. Questions to the panel can be submitted when you RSVP, or in the “comments’ live the day of the event.
