With spending more on retiree pensions to make up for paying too little in the past, the city has less money left to pay the salaries of its current employees, including teachers. Crony Christmas Lists Crammed

into Congressional Crisis

Congress is soon approaching another deadline to pass a spending bill before risking a government shutdown. When this full funding bill is finally taken up, there will inevitably be efforts to load it with crony handouts. "Tax extenders," provisions that bestow benefits on particular business interests, will be at the top of this legislator wish list. While not all tax extenders are corporate favoritism, many are examples of cronyism and should be allowed to die without renewal.
