Indivisibles,

Last week, over nine thousand people tuned in to watch our Let’s Go Joe Livestream (watch the recording here) as we launched our initiative to encourage President Biden to use the power of executive action to effect change on issues like climate, immigration reform, and student debt.

We were joined by Rep. Jayapal, Rep. Pressley, Rep. Blumenauer, Rahna Epting (Executive Director of MoveOn), and Sylvia Brown (Group Leader of Visibility, Outreach, Touch, Engage (VOTE) South Arkansas) in an inspiring event that was both a reaffirmation of community and a collective call to action hosted by our very own Leah Greenberg.

Rep. Jayapal started the night off with a reminder that we, “can and must use every tool in our toolbox to move the needle forward on critical issues,” setting a tone that reverberated through the entire night.

Picking up the baton, Rep. Pressley advised us that, “we certainly can not return to our pre-COVID, unjust, status quo normal. It was inadequate to begin with,” while challenging us to remember that student debt is a racial justice issue.

Rep. Blumenauer told us that time is short -- we are already feeling the effects of the climate crisis -- and brought an urgent call to action, “wildfires, extreme weather events, we are in the middle of a climate crisis, and I think we ought to act like it.”

Rahna Epting reinforced the notion that we are stronger together as a collective force of grassroots mobilization while relaying the notion that, “I hear, all the time… a debate between whether Democrats should tackle the challenges in front of us with legislative action or with executive action and I just want to be crystal clear with folks -- that is a false choice. We can and we must do both.”

Finally, Sylvia Brown brought it all back home with a grounding in our core values, “So folks, organizing buddies, and, as sister Rep. Pressley said, ‘organizing siblings,’ put on your gloves, marching shoes. We’ve got to keep moving and building the beloved community and expanding the table.”

So let’s listen to Sylvia, and all the rest of our guests, and keep moving forward. We’ve got work to do and the drive to get it done as long as we continue to work together as many arms of a single progressive movement.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Click here to contact your representatives about the climate crisis. There has been an upswing of reporting on President Biden possibly using the Defense Protection Act to massively ramp up our ability to manufacture clean energy technology, transition to renewables, and create millions of jobs. We need to keep the heat on to get this done and then get the President to declare a national emergency, unlocking the full power of the executive to address climate change.
  2. Click here to tell President Biden to end Title 42. Title 42 is a public health law misused by the Trump administration to deny asylum seekers from seeking safety at our southern border. Recently, unaccompanied children and Ukrainian refugees have been exempted from that order in the face of horrific violence in their home countries. It is time we extend that compassion to all asylum-seekers. Medical and health experts have recommended that the policy should be ended and that’s what the president should do.
  3. Click here to urge President Biden to take immediate action on student debt. We expect a decision by April 1 about next steps regarding the federal student loan pause that has been in effect during the COVID-19 crisis. Though we would be happy to see it extended, we would be ecstatic to see President Biden exercise executive action and cancel at least $50,000 of student debt now. This would be a big step in beginning to address the massive wealth inequality caused by systemic racism.
  4. Click here to demand swift confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson if you have a Republican senator. Click here to urge your senator to support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court if they are a Democrat. Judge Jackson has already been confirmed three times in the past on a bipartisan basis for her previous roles. She is clearly qualified. Call on your senators to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson without delay. And, if you need help, click here to access a resource for pushing back on right-wing lies about the Supreme Court nomination.

P.S. We rely on your support to keep call pages up and running, fund ads to get the word out, and continue all the work we’re doing this year. If you’re able, click here to donate to help fund our work.

 Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reaffirms that America must lead the world in a clean energy transition. Our dependence on fossil fuel empowers authoritarians like Vladimir Putin, rogue oil-producing nations, and price-gouging oil companies. For the sake of our national security and planet, we call on America’s leaders to take immediate action to invest in domestic clean energy jobs and end our dependence on fossil fuel.
We need to invest in clean energy to reduce the power of oligarchs like Putin. Click here to encourage Biden to take climate action!

 National Events

RSVP to the monthly National Activist Call (NAC) Thursday, April 7th at 8pm ET/5pm PT: The National Activist Call is a space held on the first Thursday of every month for activists, group leaders, and new members alike. Join Indivisibles across the country as we celebrate successes, discuss our national strategy, and take time to create connections while building community with each other. When we come together, we are Indivisible.
