John,

Earlier this year, I worked with Sen. Kamala Harris and many of you to put together ambitious legislation to protect North Coast communities from fires, strengthen the local economy, increase recreational opportunities, and preserve some of our most iconic landscapes.

Now I'm excited to announce that this bill is coming up for a vote in the Committee on Natural Resources. I’m hoping you can help me get it passed.

The Northwest California Wilderness, Recreation, and Working Forests Act will conserve 262,000 acres as wilderness, designate 379 miles of new wild and scenic rivers, and create a special restoration area of 730,000 acres -- all while making our forests healthier and creating local jobs through forest stewardship programs.

Will you show your support for this important bill so we can protect and restore these lands, promote our region’s vibrant outdoor recreation industry, and boost our economy?

Add your name to our petition now, before the committee votes later today, and show your support for the passage of this groundbreaking bill.

Working together with community and business leaders, conservationists, fire management professionals, anglers, mountain bikers, and many others, we put together a carefully balanced bill for the management of public lands in Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, and Mendocino counties that we can all be proud of.

Outdoor recreation generates $92 billion in consumer spending and 691,000 jobs in California, so it’s essential that we preserve our redwood forests, maintain and improve our backcountry trails and other recreational access, and protect our steelhead and salmon streams.

In addition, this bill will strengthen fire resilience by creating a network of roadside shaded fuel breaks and requiring the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management to work with communities to develop a new coordinated fire management plan for wilderness areas.

I’m hoping that our years-long effort to create this bill does not go to waste. Please join me in moving it forward by signing our petition today!

Thanks,
