John,
It's been three years since Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey introduced the Green New Deal Resolution, which outlined a new climate-and-community-first vision for our country and our movement.
Support for the Green New Deal has never been greater. Unfortunately, as fossil fuel corporations continue to destroy our communities and profit off of working families at the gas pump, our government has yet to pass climate legislation that meets the moment of crisis.
That's why nearly 50 organizations, including Sunrise, are launching the Green New Deal Champions Pledge — because we need members of Congress and future elected officials to fight as hard as they can for the Green New Deal.
John, now more than ever, we need you in this fight for Congress to pass the climate bills that make a Green New Deal a reality. Will you pledge to vote for our Green New Deal Champions this year? Our movement is growing, and Congress must catch up:
"I pledge to support and vote for all Green New Deal Champions running for Congressional seats in my district and state. I will mobilize my community for the Green New Deal family of bills: the most progressive and transformative climate policies in the United States."
It's clear: Recent polling from Data for Progress shows that the Green New Deal continues to be popular with voters across the country — especially among young people, a key voting block for Democrats.
Build Back Better proved that we're closer than ever to passing major legislation to begin the decade of the Green New Deal, but a handful of corrupt politicians who are bought out by corporate CEOs are standing in the way. Given this reality, we're not taking a step back. In the face of ever-worsening climate catastrophe, we're doubling down to continue organizing for what we need and deserve.
As we head into a mid-term year and an uncertain legislative landscape, the pledge will help us measure progress, build momentum, and make it clear to candidates and elected officials alike that anything less than being as ambitious as possible is unacceptable.
We can't wait until we have the right majorities to start doing the political work we need to — we want to start laying the foundation now so that we'll be in as strong of a position as possible when the moment to actually win legislation comes. Join us in this fight by pledging to vote for Green New Deal Champions in this consequential midterm election year.
