Texas is currently scheduled to execute Melissa Lucio on April 27, for a crime she did not commit. That means we have just 30 days to share Melissa’s story, take action, and push Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to stop her execution.

Fourteen years ago, Melissa was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter Mariah based on a biased and inadequate investigation into the child’s health history and death and a shockingly poor defense.

Melissa’s daughter Mariah tragically died in 2007, two days after she accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. Hours after Mariah’s death, police took Melissa into custody, and despite Melissa telling them more than 80 times that she did not kill or abuse her daughter, they continued to interrogate her for five hours. At 3 a.m., still reeling from the sudden loss of her child, Melissa said, “I guess I did it,” and falsely took responsibility for some of Mariah’s injuries to get police to end the interrogation.

The county district attorney then presented Melissa’s statement to the jury as a “confession” to homicide and sought the death penalty. Melissa’s attorney failed to mount a proper defense against these claims or present evidence pointing to her innocence at trial. Multiple judges have since agreed that her trial was unfair.

So now, with less than 30 days until Melissa is scheduled to be executed, we’re asking you to help us take action and save the life of an innocent person.
