John, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed the deplorable ‘Don‘t Say Gay’ bill into law. The bill will limit discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, allowing for lawsuits against school districts if violated.
DeSantis and his administration are using the lives of young queer people as pawns to curry political favor with the extreme right. Students, however, have shown this week that they will not let their educators be muzzled nor their identities erased.
Young people’s courage and resilience was on full display as they left their classrooms in peaceful protest of this regressive legislature that is harmful to all kids: LGBTQ+ youth and their non-LGBTQ+ peers. GLSEN won’t let students stand alone in this fight. GLSEN Chapters across Florida are advocating inclusive & affirming curriculum and supporting student-led clubs and GSAs.
Your support is critical. Help protect LGBTQ+ students and their educators with an urgent gift to GLSEN.
We know Florida is the testing ground for this hateful legislation and that it is already spreading to other conservative states. With your help, we will continue advocating in Florida and follow the fight to the 15 other ‘Don’t Say Gay’-style bills cropping up nationwide.
These exclusionary and discriminatory laws have no place in schools in Florida or anywhere else. No one’s quality of life should depend upon their state or zip code.
