This Women's History Month, I can think of no better way to celebrate women than by demanding equal pay and more equitable economic opportunities for women across the country.
Worldwide, white women only earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. And for women of color, immigrant women, and women living in developing countries – this gap widens significantly.
This disparity affects women's spending power, penalizes their retirement security, and creates gaps in Social Security and pensions. This leads to a lifetime of income inequality, and more women are inevitably retiring into poverty.
It is appalling that in 2022, over 50 years after the Equal Pay Act was passed, women are still not receiving equal pay for equal work. UN Women calls this "the biggest robbery in history," and I have to agree. We can't afford to wait another 50 years for legislation that will address this issue. Congress needs to act now to make equal pay a reality.
When I came to Congress, I knew we had to make progress in closing the gender pay gap for all women and there is no better time to focus on this priority than Women's History Month.
We can close the gap on income inequality by: hiring more women, promoting more women, funding women entrepreneurs, mentoring more women, and demanding for more women CEOs and women on boards.
Equal pay is not just good for women - it's good for families, businesses, and our economy. When women aren't paid what they deserve, our working families and communities pay the price. More families than ever rely on women's wages to put food on the table, save for retirement, and pay for their children's education.
