Hey John,
62 cents.
Sounds like loose change, doesn't it? That's because it
is -- and it's how much Black women earn for every dollar that white men earn.
The month of March recognizes Women's Equal Pay Day. But we're doing more than an acknowledgment of the day, we're making a demand: Pay Black women fairly.
Let's break things down with a little game of: “Did you know?”
Did you know...
-
It takes Black women 7 to 8 months longer to earn what a white male coworker earns in 1 year?
Did you know...
- Black women face a wider-than-average pay gap despite the fact we participate in the workforce at much higher rates than other women?
Did you know...
- A white adult who dropped out of high school has 70% more wealth than a Black adult with some college education? (This means that especially for Black women, relying on education alone to close the wage gap will never work.)
And did you know…
- Black women will have lost around 1 million dollars over a lifetime due to the pay gap?
John, nearly 60 years after the Equal Pay Act was signed into law, women still face barriers to equal pay. Join us in taking a pledge and show your commitment to the fight for equal pay.
Here are two reasons why Black women don't get paid their fair share: sexism and racism. Consequences of white supremacy are forced on Black women due to intersectionality, and this pay gap is just one of the many.
While women continue to break barriers in the workplace, they still face an uphill battle to ensure they're getting equal pay for equal work. A woman starting her career should not have to enter the workforce expecting her work will be valued less than her coworkers.
It especially shouldn't take Black women 20 months to get paid what a white man gets paid in 12 months. Let's fix this now.
Please join us in a renewed commitment to the fight for equal pay for all. Take our pledge today and help us fight for a more equitable future.
In love and solidarity,
