John,

We’ve all experienced the tremendous disruptions the pandemic has caused to the global supply chain. While we all were hoping these issues would get worked out once the pandemic began to wane, unfortunately, it appears we may instead need to get used to these disruptions being regular occurrences from here on out.

A sobering new report by the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) shows that dangerous and expensive interruptions to shipping and port operations are rising along with global temperatures.

With 80% of traded goods by volume conveyed along sea routes, the world’s supply chain is increasingly threatened by climate change. More powerful tropical storms and encroaching waters are at the top of the list of climate change risks.

According to the EDF analysis, catastrophic events over recent years forecast what is to come. Storms have repeatedly cost hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars in damage to U.S. ports over the last 15 years. When a port slows its operations or closes down due to a storm, delays reverberate along the supply chain.

The EDF projection of the impact of climate change on shipping comes on the heels of the slow recovery of the supply chain from the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governments worldwide are dealing with rising prices, inflation, and lasting damage to their economies as supply chains slowly rebound from the pandemic crisis.

Now it’s evident that climate change will pose even more devastating consequences for global supply chains.

John, SEEC members of Congress know what the U.S. and global economies are facing if climate change is allowed to disrupt and damage supply chains unchallenged. That’s why SEEC members are fighting for sustainable solutions to combat the lasting effects of climate change, increase the resiliency of our ports, and secure our supply chains so they can better withstand disruptions.
