In the week ahead, you’ll likely be receiving emails from campaigns (including ours!) talking about the all-important FEC deadline on Thursday.

John, if you’re wondering what’s so important about this deadline, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Let us explain:

At the end of each quarter, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) requires all candidates running for federal office to file a public report.

This report includes everything from the amount raised and the number of donors, to where money was spent all in the three months prior.

Each FEC deadline gives Republican mega donors and campaign operatives a glimpse at the foundation of campaigns like ours. A strong fundraising report might deter a dark money super PAC from investing money in attack ads against Barbara. Major signs of weakness, on the other hand, could invite a challenger to this race.

All this to say, Thursday’s FEC deadline presents our first major test of the midterm election year. That’s why we’re coming to you today:
