Corrin Rankin knows that being a black Republican can be hard. Rankin, founder and president of Legacy Republicans Alliance (LRA), which aims to expand the GOP’s black membership, can sympathize with her friend, actor Isaiah Washington’s dilemma. In 2008, Rankin voted for President Barack Obama, but shortly afterwards, she began re-evaluating certain Democratic policies, especially with regard to how they affected black Americans. She believed that high taxes and regulations were harming businesses, including her own.

Women so often hear that bigger government is going to solve all of their problems. From Elizabeth Warren to Bernie Sanders touting government-paid-for child care and paid leave, and new regulations in the name of equality, the Left is constantly selling their agenda as necessary for women to thrive. However, big-government mandates don’t help women thrive. They backfire, leading to less opportunity, choice, flexibility, and freedom.

Congress was supposed to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) almost a year ago… but didn’t. The current bill, which was recently introduced in the Senate by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, is partisan in nature and simply does not do enough to protect women and girls from some of the worst forms of violence against women and exploitation—like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child marriage, sex trafficking, and honor killings. Contact your senators today—and urge them to fix this and pass a real VAWA.

For her trouble, she received several nasty tweets, including one from ABC News’ Chief Political Analyst Matthew Dowd: "Elise Stefanik is a perfect example of why just electing someone because they are a woman or a millennial doesn’t necessarily get you the leaders we need."
