Dear John,
Inflation has become the #1 issue in the midterm elections, and the American people—rightly—want action.
But in order to solve this problem, the American people first need to understand why these price hikes are happening. And here's a hint: It's not what the Republicans or most of the corporate media are telling you.
The underlying problem is not inflation. It's corporate power. The entire American economy is concentrated into the hands of a few greedy, corporate giants with the power to raise prices.
Over the last several months, Inequality Media Civic Action has been running a massive public education campaign to help the American people understand the deeper, structural causes of inflation, and our campaign is working. In fact, the latest polls show that 82% of voters now agree that one of the main reasons prices are going up is because big corporations are jacking up prices and passing higher costs to consumers while making record profits.
This is huge progress, but we can't let up. If Republicans are able to convince voters that the problem is "big government," they will be able to enact policies that only make things worse for everyday Americans.
Inequality Media Civic Action is ramping up our campaign to make sure the American people know the truth about inflation, and who's really responsible. Will you chip in and help us continue to produce and distribute our proven-effective videos to make sure the American people know the truth about inflation?
Republicans are hammering President Biden and Democrats over inflation because they think it's their ticket to victory in the midterms. But we can't let the American people fall for their fear-mongering.
Republicans are blatantly ignoring the fact that corporations are seeing their fattest profit margins in 70 years and are using the cover of inflation to push prices even higher.
The problem, at its core, is corporate greed.
If the market were actually competitive, corporations would lower prices to attract more customers. Even if some costs increased, they would do everything possible to avoid passing those costs on to consumers for fear of losing business to competitors.
But that's the opposite of what we're seeing. Corporations have so much market power that they can raise prices with impunity. So the fundamental problem isn't inflation per se, it's the lack of competition.
There are solutions—like a windfall profits tax on price-gouging corporations including Big Oil—but that's not what the Republicans want. Tax cuts, deregulation, interest rate hikes, cuts in funding for social programs... all these GOP "solutions" will only drive up unemployment and make things worse for working families who are experiencing sticker shock as prices continue to skyrocket.
Here's the good news: When we started talking about the hidden link between inflation and corporate concentration a few months ago, we were scoffed at by many in the mainstream media. Now, it's becoming conventional wisdom. President Biden even talked about it in his State of the Union Address, and polling shows that the American people are catching on.
Our small but mighty creative team is producing eye-catching videos and super viral social media content every day to keep hammering on the facts Americans need to know. But Republicans are shameless and will never stop lying to gain power. So we need to ramp up our campaign now.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help make sure the American people know the truth about inflation and corporate greed?
Thanks for helping us spread the truth,
Robert Reich
