We’ve seen some ridiculous questions and comments from Republican senators about Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson this week…

Ted Cruz asked if she thinks babies are racist and started reading a children’s book. Lindsey Graham questioned her faith and then interrupted her so many times when she tried to answer that the Chairman had to intervene. Mike Braun said that decisions on interracial marriage and abortion should be left up to the states. Yet despite these condescending attacks and racist remarks, Judge Jackson kept her composure and calmly answered every question.

As a colleague of Judge Jackson’s on the Harvard Board, as someone who has gone through my own Senate confirmation process, and frankly as an American, watching these hearings has been frustrating and disappointing to say the least. That’s why I’m reaching out today to ask, will you join me in calling on the Senate to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black female justice on the Supreme Court?

Too often, Black women are picked apart and told that no matter how accomplished and qualified they are, they will be treated as less than because of who they are. Judge Jackson has more judicial experience than the majority of current justices when they were confirmed — she holds Ivy League degrees and was a public defender, a clerk on the Supreme Court, a district and federal appeals judge, is an amazing mother of two — but because she is a black woman, she is wrongly labeled as a “diversity hire” and “underqualified.”

For many of us, watching the confirmation hearing has been a rollercoaster of emotions, both painful and hopeful. It’s hard not to recall our own experiences — times I was bullied for my skin color in school, the hundreds of looks and snide comments I’ve received, and most recently the offensive statements made by a Maryland Democratic Party official claiming that Black candidates cannot win statewide in Maryland. Race shouldn’t be seen as a limiting factor, but so many of us have been told to stay in our place time and time again just because of our skin color. And in 2022, it’s appalling that many people still believe that there are things we can’t do.

Frankly, Judge Jackson is extraordinarily well-qualified and we would be lucky to have her serving on the highest court of the land. But, there are those who disagree and it’s on us to show a surge of support and prove that we have her back.
