The story of our district is the story of America. It was here, in Alabama’s Black Belt, that the Civil Rights Movement prospered and paved the way to the end of segregation and equal voting rights.

Civil Rights leaders like my friend, the late Congressman John Lewis, locked arms with the Foot Soldiers as they crossed the Edmund Pettus bridge. He knew what stood ahead of them – fiery hatred, brutality, and condemnation rooted in racism.

But John took on the fight because it was worth it.

Today, 57 years after the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, we’re noticing old fights becoming new again. Republican legislators across our country are working hard to dismantle the voting rights for people of color.

And folks, the worst part is that they expect the rest of us not to speak up.

It’s why I introduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in honor of the Congressman’s fight to expand and protect voting rights – because enough is enough.

As a third-generation Selmian, fighting for what’s right is in my blood. And as Alabama’s first Black woman to be elected to Congress to represent the Black Belt, the fight for civil rights and voting rights is personal.

I’m ready to continue to show up and speak out on the issues that matter most to our community. I’d be humbled to receive your support for my campaign to win re-election.
