John,
A record-breaking “bomb cyclone” brought unseasonably warm temperatures to the North Pole last week. That’s despite the fact that the North Pole is still in the midst of its six-month “polar night” when the sun never reaches its full height.
We wish this was a one-off weather event in the Arctic, but unfortunately, this is another sign of climate change’s impact on sea ice.
Over the last few decades, we’ve already experienced a warming trend in the Arctic, with temperatures far above the norm. On average, temperatures have been around 25 degrees Celsius higher than typical winter temperatures. Some forecast models indicate that parts of the North Pole will experience their highest March temperatures on record.
John — This isn’t normal, and these warmer trends in the Arctic are only hastening the melting of sea ice. But if we fail to take decisive action to reduce our carbon footprint and slow down the rapid rate of global warming, disastrous records like this one will become even more commonplace.
Beyond just impacting sea level rise, sea ice also helps regulate the planet’s temperature by influencing the circulation of the atmosphere and the ocean. It’s also critically important to the survival of wildlife such as polar bears and walruses.
We cannot wait until a new, more startling statistical record is broken. We must act now.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
