Our reproductive freedoms are under constant attack. Last year in Texas, the legislature passed Senate Bill 8, a law that bans abortion around six weeks into a pregnancy — setting a dangerous precedent for the state of abortion rights across the country. And now, many states are using the framework behind S.B.8 to pass their own dangerous abortion bans.
Now more than ever, Congress must make codifying Roe v. Wade a priority to secure abortion rights under federal law. The attacks won’t stop from far-right conservatives and we can’t stop fighting to defend reproductive rights.
But our representative, Henry Cuellar, has a history of aligning himself with the anti-choice lobby. In fact, he is the LAST anti-choice Democrat in the House. He even gave a speech and received an award at the nation’s largest anti-choice rally earlier this year. We can’t trust him to fight for all South Texans and do what’s right for us.
Cuellar’s anti-choice platform is dangerous and South Texans deserve better than this betrayal of their constitutional rights. Once elected to Congress, I will fight harder than ever to codify Roe v. It’s not a secret where Henry Cuellar stands on the right to choose.
After Texas’ Republican leaders passed S.B.8 — our Congressman refused to defend us and our reproductive rights. In fact, he doubled down by voting “no” to pass the Women’s Health and Protection Act (WHPA), a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade into federal law.
But once I am elected to Congress, I will work overtime to ensure abortion rights are fully protected. Because I understand that quality healthcare — including access to reproductive healthcare — is necessary to achieve justice and economic security for low-income Black and Latino people, who face more roadblocks in order to access contraception.
In the last election, anti-choice special interests like the Koch brothers’ empire flooded into our race to defeat us. But now that we’re just 59 days from the runoff election and we’re ramping up our efforts to garner enough support we need to defeat Cuellar.
